Frequently Asked Questions
To add GST: multiply the original price by the GST rate divided by 100 to get the GST amount, then add it to the original price. Example: ₹1,000 product with 18% GST → GST = ₹180, Total = ₹1,180. To reverse-calculate (remove GST): Original = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + GST Rate).
For intra-state (same state) transactions, GST is split equally: CGST goes to the central government and SGST goes to the state government. For inter-state transactions, IGST (full rate) applies and is collected by the centre, which then distributes the state's share. Example: 18% GST within Maharashtra = 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
Businesses with annual turnover exceeding ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for services, ₹10 lakh in special category states) must register for GST. E-commerce sellers, inter-state suppliers, and casual taxable persons must register regardless of turnover.
GST applies only on the margin (profit) when dealing in second-hand goods under the Margin Scheme. A registered dealer pays GST only on the difference between selling price and purchase price, not on the full selling price.
Restaurants charge 5% GST (no input tax credit) on food and beverages. However, restaurants in 5-star hotels, or those serving alcohol, may charge 18% GST. Service charge is separate from GST and is not mandatory — you can request its waiver.
